Google recently announced it would acquire Skybox Imaging for $500 million. Skybox Imaging is a provider of high-quality satellites and satellite images.
The acquisition of Skybox Imaging is expected to help Google improve its already impressive mapping service. However, industry experts expect Skybox’s technology to assist Google with improvements to its other Internet service offerings.
Google has this to say about the acquisition, “Their satellites will help keep our maps accurate with up-to-date imagery. Over time, we also hope that Skybox’s team and technology will be able to help improve Internet access and disaster relief — areas Google has long been interested in.”
Skybox Imaging was founded in 2009 by Stanford business school students preparing a business plan for an entrepreneurship course. Since their founding, they have secured financing from several well-known sources including Khosla Ventures and Bessemer Venture Partners. They have launched two satellites since their founding.
