• Japanese-born Miho Aoki and Vietnamese-born Thuy Pham founded United Bamboo in New York 1998 and has since expanded the brand into a cultural project. United Bamboo has established itself as a pioneer in fashion design and creative collaboration with downtown artists, curators and musicians. United Bamboo has been connected to some of New Yorks major downtown musicians from the appearance of Chan Marshall in an early ad campaign to running its own music label, UUAR, which put out the seminal compilation They Keep Me Smiling curated by Black Dice drummer & artist Hisham Baroocha. A collectors hardcover book/CD that included music and artwork by Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, Black Dice & others. Mucisians who have been commissioned to make fashion show music and/or performed include: Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Panda Bear, Sean Lennon, James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Pete Kember (Spaceman 3), and Cibo Matto. Artist collaborations have included Terence Koh modeling for United Bamboos menswear campaign as well as commissioned artist series tee shirts with some of New Yorks best known young gallerists like John Connelly, Daniel Reich and James Fuentes. The brand has also collaborated with Rita Ackermann and Pier Fichefeux on various prints. United Bamboos first store in Tokyo was designed by famed artist turned architect, Vito Acconci. The Daikanyama shop has since closed and a new one has opened at Marronnier Gate in Tokyo. Beyond the art and music world, United Bamboo also collaborated with apparel and accessory products with other brands like Parisian hip brand Kitsune, Japanese accessory brand Porter, Converse shoes, Eastland boots, and Kaneko handmade sunglasses. Aoki and Pham are also behind the adorable line of cat inspired products called Catclub. Today, the United Bamboo brand consists of the main ready-to-wear collection, accessories and lifestyle goods line Le Bac, organic room wear line Bamboo By, and of course, Catclub.
