• Lancaster Engineering and Lancaster Street Lab combine to form a boutique transportation consulting firm that is large enough to offer a well-rounded range of experience, yet small enough to offer personable and responsive service to our clients. We specialize in providing innovative, forward-thinking transportation solutions in an ever-changing world. Our mix of public and private clients allows us to balance the many competing interests inherent to transportation projects, and our services run the gamut from traditional engineering analysis to cutting-edge research and design. With over 30 years of industry experience, Lancaster has built a solid reputation based on meticulous project management, crafting an approach and work plan designed to meet the challenges unique to a given project. Our project managers pride themselves on accessibility, providing one-stop solutions and a single point of contact to our clients. Our firm has had a multimodal focus from the beginning. We were founded on the second floor of Portlands Union Station in 1983 by Tom Lancaster, a train enthusiast who would go on to become one of the nations leading experts in at-grade rail crossings and mitigating transit-auto conflicts. Through most of its history under Tom, the firm consisted of two to three staff members who worked primarily on traditional traffic engineering projects like traffic impact studies and signal designs. Todd Mobley took over as the firms sole principal upon Toms retirement in 2007. Under Todds leadership, the firm has grown to include ten staff members, expanding its services to include transportation planning and design projects such as parking analyses, bikeway design, and Vision Zero planning. In 2015, the firm launched the Street Lab in order to provide clients with innovative, holistic solutions to transportation problems that transcend traditional disciplinary silos.
