  • Marin County is home to nearly 50,000 people who worry about where their next meal will come from. Yet in our abundant county, tons upon tons of fresh food goes to waste. And each 100 pounds of food that enters our landfills creates 8.3 pounds of methane 28 times worse for our atmosphere than carbon dioxide. If global food waste were a country, it would rank 3rd in greenhouse gas product after the U.S. and China.ExtraFood picks up excess fresh food and planned donations from any Marin organization such as restaurants, grocery stores, farmers' markets, schools, corporate cafeterias, and caterers and immediately delivers it to nonprofits serving Marins most vulnerable people. Seniors, children, working families, the homeless, and many more -- our goal is to help our recipient partners serve more people, provide more complete and healthy meals, and shift food program funding to their primary services.Since we began operations in December 2013, ExtraFoods staff and 160 volunteers have recovered and delivered more than 900,000 pounds of food to 81 sites throughout Marin, preventing 70,000+ pounds of methane from entering the atmosphere. The 12,000+ food donations we've delivered include fresh produce, prepared food, dairy products, eggs, meat, packaged goods, and bakery goods. We reach more than 5,000 people per month with our deliveries of healthy, fresh food.ExtraFood is led by a team of experienced professionals, including Founder and Executive Director Marv Zauderer, Board Members and longtime Marin restaurateurs Heidi Insalata Krahling and Dan Ohlson, and Board Members Carla Buchanan, Kevin O'Donnell and Matt Slepin. We're supported in part by grants from the Marin Community Foundation, the County of Marin, and a wide range of other organizational and individual donors.Our mission: to help end hunger and waste in Marin.
