• Vara Kamins Impressions of Light® (VKI) was founded in 1999, by artist, writer and former public health nurse, Vara Kamin. VKI was created in response to requests from health care architects, and health care professionals who expressed a need for a distinctive and differentiating type of imagery that had the capacity to consistently, deeply and actively engage patients, as well as counter-balance the negative visual impact of highly stressful/technical hospital and various healthcare environments. These requests led to the creation of intentional environments, featuring the replicated (backlit) images of Kamins original works of art. The result of patients engaging with these unique images has produced repeated, observable calming effects in children, teens, adults and the elderly alike; lowering patient (and family) fears, anxieties and stress in a wide variety of clinical care settings including: diagnostic and treatment radiology, pre-sedation, adult and pediatric intensive care units, burn units, emergency departments, birthing suites, end of life/hospice rooms, etc. The effectiveness is now being documented in clinical case studies and research papers.
