- The Jacob Rieger & Company distillery was founded in 1887 in Kansas City's West Bottoms district. The brand offered over 100 alcoholic products and took pride in maintaining a unique customer base of a quarter of a million individuals by offering mail-order services. In 1915, the brand was so successful that Jacob's son, Alexander, constructed the Rieger Hotel at 20th and Main Street in Kansas City's Crossroads district. The hotel showcased the brand while complementing the newly completed Union Station.As the country began to grasp the concept of abstinence, the federal government passed the 18th Amendment in January of 1919 which called for the prohibition of all manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages. It took until December 1933 for the government to pass the 21st Amendment which repealed Prohibition.Most liquor brands didn't survive Prohibition and will be forever lost. 95 years have lapsed between the day Jacob's son, Alexander Rieger, closed the distillery and Jacob's great-great-great-grandson, Andy Rieger, helped reopened it.
