• The Tank is a Manhattan-based non-profit arts presenter. We serve emerging and established artists engaged in the pursuit of new ideas and forms of expression. Our goal is to foster an environment of inclusiveness and remove the burden of cost from the creation of new work for artists launching their careers and experimenting within their art form. The heart of our services is providing free performance space in the 62-seat blackbox that we operate in Manhattan, and we also offer a suite of other resources such as free rehearsal space and promotional support. We present performances across a range of disciplines: theater, music, dance, comedy, film, and storytelling. We keep ticket prices affordable and view our work as democratic, opening up both the creation and attendance of the arts to all and positioning the arts within civic and socio-political discourse. The Tank operates using open submissions in each discipline. Applications are selected by a team of curators. The primary criteria for selection are clarity of vision and ability to execute that vision, and the goal of this method of selection is to be as inclusive as possible and represent as many diverse voices on stage as we can. Our standard artist package consists of: free space for between one and nine performances; at least four free hours of rehearsal space; access to subsidized rehearsal space at the rate of $20/hour in the theater; a full sound and lighting package; access to two projectors and a piano at no charge; access to chairs, rehearsal cubes, and tables at no charge; a 50/50 box office split after the first 10 tickets sold, and in some cases, a $100 guarantee per performance; front of house staff; fiscal sponsorship with a 3% processing fee (industry standard is 6-7%); the creation of a video trailer, as well as staff and equipment to film performances; and promotional support such as inclusion in Tank eblasts and press releases, and posts on social media outlets.
