• The mission of FRESHFARM Markets, a local Washington DC non profit organization, is to educate the public about food and environmental issues and to provide vital economic opportunities for local farmers and artisanal producers.Through our 10 farmers markets, we strive to build and strengthen the local food movement in the Chesapeake Bay region. We use those markets to create vibrant urban and community places, to save the small family farmer and producer, and to showcase our regions agricultural bounty. We aim to create a sustainable urban-rural partnership that brings the blessings of healthy and local food to our communities and sustains the working landscapes that feed those communities.FRESHFARM Markets operates 10 producer-only farmers markets with more than 150 farmers and producers from five states, who farm more than 9,000 acres of land. Our markets attract more than 360,000 customers a year from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. To ensure the future of farmland in our region and to spread the word about sustainable agriculture and the health of our citizens, we run 5 outreach and educational programs. These programs help us make fresh food available to customers of all income levels, teach our market communities about growing and eating healthy food, allow our farmers and producers to learn new sustainable methods and practices, and provide additional sources of healthy food to emergency food providers in our market areas.
