- The Well Project is a non-profit organization whose mission is to change the course of the HIV/AIDS pandemic through a unique and comprehensive focus on women and girls. Since its founding by leading HIV activist Dawn Averitt, The Well Project has established itself as the premier online resource on women and HIV both nationally and globally, directly reaching more than 1 million users annually. The Well Project leverages technology to improve health outcomes and increase quality of life for women and girls living with HIV. In the more than 13 years that we have been in operation, the evolution of technology and emerging ways that people access information and connect with each other via social networking has not only dramatically increased the reach of The Well Projects resources, but has also exponentially expanded our impact. We assess this impact on an ongoing basis and have been able to demonstrate the far-reaching effects of providing current, accurate information along with an online social support community, including:Decreased isolation and self-stigmaIncreased self-esteem and quality of lifeImproved overall health care experiences for women and girlsOur goal is to expand access to woman-focused information and improve health literacy; provide community building and support; and advance treatment advocacy, capacity building and leadership among women and transgender women living with HIV.
