• The Vasculitis Foundation (VF) advocates for early diagnosis, leading-edge treatment, research, and ultimately a cure for all types of vasculitis. The foundation supports and empowers patients through education and awareness. Through the VF's detailed website, bimonthly newsletter, medical consultants, symposiums, webinars, chapters, support groups and contacts, the VF educates patients, their families and health care professionals about vasculitis. The VF Research program funds research on vasculitis to determine the cause, develop more effective treatments and to discover a cure/s for the disease. The VF funds research worldwide, seeking out the most innovative and promising research being performed. Grants of $50,000/year support pilot studies investigating interesting areas of research. The VF is funding 11 studies in Australia, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. The program is funded by donations, honors, memorials and special fundraising events and has funded almost $1.5 million in research since 2002.The VF Vasculitis Fellowship provides the opportunity for one- or two- year tracks designed to support the training of physician scientists who wish to gain clinical expertise in vasculitis and who may also wish to pursue an investigational career in this field. The VF's first fellow, Dr. Elizabeth Brant, began training in July 2013 at the University of North Carolina and its second fellow, Dr. Rennie Rhee will begin in July 2014 at the University of Pennsylvania. Vasculitis is a family of rare autoimmune diseases that can affect people of all ages. The term vasculitis means inflammation of the blood vessels, arteries, veins or capillaries. When such inflammation occurs, it causes changes in the walls of blood vessels, such as weakening and narrowing that can progress to the point of blood vessel blockage to organs. This blockage can cause serious organ damage and without proper treatment may even result in death.
