• The National Union of Healthcare Workers is a democratic, worker-led union dedicated to improving the lives of caregivers and patients. Our mission is to hold healthcare corporations accountable to the public, to establish better working conditions and higher standards of care, and to give our members a stronger voice in the workplace. NUHW was founded in 2009 in response to disturbing trends in the practices and management of health care unions. While other unions have shifted to top-down, corporate management styles and closed-door meetings that leave workers with little say in their own affairs, NUHW is a transparent, democratic institution: workers set the agenda, workers lead bargaining talks with employers, and workers elect their own leaders. We take a hands-on approach; we fight for patients and caregivers and we make no agreements with employers without member approval. Our worker-based movement has enjoyed great success. Under the banner of NUHW and in our previous incarnation, we have established the highest standards for hospital workers and the patients they care for. We have successfully negotiated contracts with increased pay and benefits, better working conditions, no takeaways, and vital improvements in patient care and safety. As a result, NUHW is the nation's fastest-growing healthcare labor union. NUHW is devoted to the dignity, safety, and well-being of healthcare workers and patients. We believe workers have the right to make decisions about issues that affect them in their union, in the workplace, and in society at large. We believe that healthcare is a human right, and we are devoted to fighting for universal healthcare coverage. To achieve these goals, healthcare workers must stand together, united and strong; NUHWs greatest asset is the solidarity of its membership.
