• In 1953, the President of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, Arnold Roth, recommended to the incoming president of the Chamber, Leonard Rehg, that a survey be conducted to see if it was feasible to establish a United Fund in Cape Girardeau. In 1954, President Rehg acted on this suggestion. The survey results' recommendation was that the community was ready, and the Chamber of Commerce, Retail Merchants Association, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce established a Board of Directors. The first Campaign was held in 1954 with Clyde Harris as Campaign Chairman. The goal was set at $49,500.Today, United Way of Southeast Missouri serves the communities of Cape Girardeau, Scott, Bollinger and Perry Counties.United Way agencies strengthen families, provide job counseling and training, offer affordable childcare, help the elderly, reduce and prevent health problems, help people overcome disabilities, build safer communities, provide disaster relief, prevent violence and more.United Ways community-wide fundraising effort is the most efficient way to maintain and improve these services. 99% of every dollar you invest goes to help people. Money raised in the campaign is used in our region to directly help your neighbors and your family.
