• The Council of Community Services was established in 1960 as a result of the efforts of over 70 community organizations who saw a need for comprehensive planning in the Roanoke Valley. Fifty-five years later, the Council is still providing leadership for organizations and individuals in the health and social services field. With a staff of over 53 the Council team provides consulting services focusing on community engagement, strategic planning, affordable housing, homelessness, HIV prevention and care, information referral, and nonprofit organizational capacity building. Over the past 5 decades, the Council of Community Services has worked closely with its community partners to identify community problems, to link the community to solutions, and to develop programs that will provide the solution. It is recognized for its expertise in the following issue areas: Community Engagement, Homelessness, HIV Prevention & Care, and Information & Referral. The Council provides planning to the community by: * Identifying health & human service needs by convening and facilitating groups of interested professionals and citizens; * Developing strategies to meet those needs either by creating new programs or services or encouraging groups to work together to solve community problems; * Evaluating programs to ensure that services are having a positive impact on the community; and * Coordinating services through community coalitions such as: o Family Violence Coordinating Council o Roanoke Regional Housing Network
