• The Tribal Government of St. Paul Island (TGSPI) adopted the policies of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Act during the Fall of 1995. Prior to that, nearly all services offered on behalf of the agency were delivered via regional Non-profits located 800 miles away in Anchorage. Since 1995, the Tribal Government has taken full responsibility for management and delivery of most tribal programs. These actions have led to significant economic growth, expanded services, and the establishment of local tribal enterprises. St. Paul Tribal Government has improved employment conditions and transformed itself from a relatively inactive participant in the community to a thriving Tribal Government representative and the largest employer in the community. When evaluating St. Pauls past performance, it is notable to recognize that the Tribal Government of St. Paul has successfully overcome the challenges of its remote location in the middle of Bering Sea, 800 miles west of Anchorage and 250 miles north of Dutch Harbor.
