Dissolving MicroNeedlesUMP has developed a dissolving microneedle patch for delivery of active ingredients, whether pharmaceutical or cosmetic, into the epidermal and upper dermal layers of the skin. Microneedles, made of one or more biocompatible polymers, are optimally spaced to penetrate the stratum corneum, then dissolve or detach in the skin, depending on the polymer choices. Depending on the dosing requirements, the total number of microneedles across the patch surface can range from hundreds to >1000. We have successfully made microneedle arrays composed of Hyaluronic Acid, PVP and Pullulan with proven strength and stability. The patch backing is flexible for improved application to both body and facial skin for a variety of patch sizes and shapes. The patch is applied via an intuitive applicator that will incorporate spring-loaded, press-and-hold or other methods.Manufacturing of Dissolving Microneedles:UMP's approach to manufacturing is novel and scalable. While most academic processes utilize a centrifuge for small-scale manufacture, UMP has developed a manual-based process composed of modular units with additional automation planned.
