- One of the oldest and most successful charitable organizations in the world, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is an international, nonprofit, Catholic lay organization of approximately 800,000 men and women throughout the world who volunteer to seek out and provide person-to-person aid to the poor and needy in 150 countries on five continents. The first SVdP Conference in the United States was established in 1845 in St. Louis, Mo. Membership in the United States totals more than 160,000 in 4,400 communities. The national headquarters is in St. Louis, Mo. The members are known as Vincentians, after St. Vincent de Paul, the patron of the Society. Vincentians are organized into Conferences (chapters), groups of volunteers who gather together to grow spiritually and offer person-to-person service to those living in poverty regardless of their religion, race or ethnic origin.The National Council supports all of the local Conferences and councils across the country to help Vincentians become better servants of the poor and become better prepared to address the ongoing, ever-growing need for assistance to the poor.
