• We are all about inspiring Indigenous youth!Unlocking Silent Histories is a nonprofit organization fostering opportunities for Indigenous youth to critically analyze their representation in the media and creatively express themselves by producing documentaries about their culture from their perspective. It inspires the promotion of cultural understanding by connecting youth across geographical boundaries. Formal education and associated instructional strategies have acted as a mechanism to assimilate and reform indigenous youth. This contributes to a belief that the diverse set of knowledges held are incorrect leaving a jarring disconnect between education and everyday living for these students. Often, learning has been organized to erase, fetishize, or villainize historical pasts; imparting negative implications for the indigenous demographic and the global citizenry. Indigenous youth carry knowledge and experience that remains unrecognized as a resource for learning; but are forcefully distanced from their cultural and linguistic heritages. Such instructional devices have silenced their voices and obstructed efforts to counter movements. Western media plays a significant role in justifying a need to reform indigenous peoples. Harmful renditions and negatively biased narratives have illustrated natives as savages, alcoholics, and extinct. Misrepresentations amplify a damaging Western collective memory and accelerate the disappearance of languages and the associated cultural knowledges. The dissemination of such erroneous depictions aid in the continual loss of a united ancestry and diverse customs and practices that enrich our tapestry within the world. Empowering Indigenous youth through critical and creative filmmaking education is a means of altering these patterns.
