• Ultralytics LLC proposes to investigate the design and construction of a scintillating-fiber array detector for use in detection and reconstruction of gamma and neutron radiation. Such a detector would be useful as a wide area detector and imager of possible gamma and neutron sources. With both fast neutron sensitivity and gamma sensitivity inherent in the proposed design, Ultralytics proposes an imaging system that would actually be able to overlay either neutron or gamma heatmaps over images of the existing environment. This dual sensitivity could be very useful, for example, in identifying possible sources of Special Nuclear Materials at ports of entry to the U.S., as such materials exhibit a characteristic neutron spectrum in addition to a gamma spectrum, and as a result this dual detection system would exhibit lower rates of false positives. With near-isotropic sensitivity, the gamma fiber model is much more suited to wide area surveillance and detection of radiation sources than more traditional methods, such as coded aperture arrays which are only sensitive to a very small region in the field of view. This means that the Ultralytics fiber array detector would be able to create a full 360 degree radiation map about the detector location. With the aid of external cameras the detector could quickly create a very intuitive and visually easy to understand heat map of the environment in every direction. The underlying reconstruction technique used in this fiber array model is similar to that utilized by a neutron scatter camera, however the Ultralytics detector design would rely on time of flight measurements, processed through a trained neural network, to reconstruct scatter vertices. The fibers would be read out at both ends by low noise, fast-timing Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) arrays which are now commercially available, such as the SENSL J Series SiPMs, which enjoy reduced dark count rates compared to past models.
