Get Full AccessDescription
- The Freedom Education Project Puget Sound (FEPPS) offers a college preparatory and Associate of Arts and Sciences degree program to women at Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW). Our mission is to provide a rigorous college program to incarcerated women in Washington State and create pathways to higher education after women are released from prison. Our goal is to increase women prisoners' economic and personal empowerment, contribute to family stability and reduce the number of women returning to prison. FEPPS is a strategic initiative of the University of Puget Sound and a member of the Bard National Consortium of Higher Education in Prison. Women are the fastest growing segment of the prison population, and women of color are incarcerated disproportionately. Women releasing from prison have often accrued significant debt; carry the stigma of incarceration; remain under-educated and barred from employment opportunities. This traps them in a cycle of poverty and increases the likelihood of their children being imprisoned. Higher education can break this cycle. The inverse relationship between educational attainment and recidivism is steep: those who go to college while incarcerated are 45% less likely to return to prison than those who do not. Women who pursue higher education return to their communities and families more psychologically stable, with stronger economic prospects, and significantly reduced likelihood of being involved in drug-use, crime and violence. This is crucial considering that the majority of women in WCCW are the primary caretakers for their families. I arrived in prison at the tender age of 18. Expanding my mind has changed who I am. I no longer view myself as an object in the world; I am a woman who helps make, change and sustain the world. Education is now what motivates and drives me. Without these courses, I would still just be existing rather than living. Felicia
