• The Wyatt Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports the equine therapy program at Spirit Ranch, in Southeastern Idaho. The program helps families who have a child affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) including Asperger's Syndrome. At Spirit Ranch, the child with ASD and her family participate in specialized therapy, guidance programs, workshops and recreational activities. Family members learn how to interact with horses through feeding, grooming, walking and riding. Focusing on the horse draws the ASD child away from her personal concerns and expands her mind, senses and overall comfort level. The rhythmic movement of the horse gently relaxes the rider while improving her balance and coordination. The rider learns to interact with and control the horse, increasing her self confidence and trust. The child with ASD quickly learns that she can do the same things her siblings and parents can. Equine therapy is only a part of the fun at Spirit Ranch. Families also prepare meals, go to the fishing hole, take nature walks, play guitar and sing by the campfire, take care of farmyard animals, learn about the local flora and fauna, and more. Since the entire family participates, everyone benefits, learning valuable skills, tools and techniques that can be applied to routine daily life back home. Activities are tailored to meet the needs of all ages and are conducted in a safe, supervised, wholesome environment that emphasizes the beauty of nature and living things. Many of the activities are specifically geared toward workforce development and are transferable to a variety of jobs.
