• ABC 27 first signed on the air in September 1976 under the call letters WECA. The call letters were the initials of the station's founding owner, E. C. Allen. E. C., as he was known to many, was a local businessman and owner of Mobile Home Industries. Back in those early days the station slogan was WE CAN do it!, cleverly incorporating the call sign into the slogan. WECA was the third TV station to service the Tallahassee-Thomasville market, following the CBS and PBS stations.In 1985, E. C. Allen sold the station to Tallahassee 27 Limited Partnership, whose majority partners were Maryland Senator Joseph Tydings and Florida Congressman Lou Frey. It was under this ownership that the call letters were changed to WTXL. The station went through two more ownership changes before its current owners, Southern Broadcast Corporation of Sarasota, took over on November 30, 2005.In 2007, WTXL ABC 27 completed a new digital television facility located in Midway, Florida, and became the first local television station in the Thomasville-Tallahassee market to originate local news in high definition! In addition to multiple daily newscasts on our main channel, we broadcast BounceTV - the only African-American network - on our 27.2 digital channel, 24-hour WeatherNation on our 27.3 digital channel, and QVC on our 27.4 digital channel.Calkins Media, Inc. had its start in western Pennsylvania, when the late Stanley W. Calkins purchased controlling interest in his first newspaper, the Uniontown Daily News-Standard in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on February 15, 1937. S.W. Calkins passed in 1973. His descendants are the current owners and directors of Calkins Media Inc., which now has a total combined daily circulation of more than 234,000 and a combined Sunday circulation of more than 265,000 with the Burlington County Times, Bucks County Courier Times, The Intelligencer, Times Online, and Herald Standard newspapers, as well as television stations WWSB, WAAY, and WTXL.
